With the right battery, the same sunshine covers your evening. Victoria's new Smart Rate tariffs even standardise the shape of the day: cheap power from 11am to 3pm, the peak from 3pm to 9pm, and from October 2026 some plans make midday power free. We size it from your actual bill, hour by hour.

Small bills, flat tariffs and heavy daytime use can make a battery a poor buy today. Around one quote in five, we recommend waiting or starting somewhere else. That costs us sales and earns us the other four, and it is the standard our reviews are built on.
Three honest cases against a battery today.
- A flat tariff. If you pay one rate all day, storage has less arbitrage to work with. Sometimes the right first move is the tariff, not the hardware.
- A small bill. Below a certain usage the payback stretches past patience. We will show you the line, and which side of it you are on.
- Heavy daytime use. If you are home using the solar as it is made, you are already doing what a battery does. Panels first, storage later.
If any of these are you, the calculator and the Exam will say so. That is the point of them.

Is a battery actually worth it in Melbourne?
For most homes on a time-of-use tariff using power in the evening, yes, and for some homes, honestly, not yet. It depends on your bill, your tariff and whether you already have solar. Our calculator shows the maths in the open and the Energy Exam confirms it on your switchboard.
What does the federal battery discount do to the price?
It reduces the installed price of an eligible battery by thousands of dollars, and the discount steps down on 1 January. Every price we show already includes it, and we will tell you the exact figure for your system in writing.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar?
Usually, yes. We check your inverter, your switchboard and your export settings at the Exam, and if a retrofit is not the right answer we will say so and show you what is.
Will a battery run my home in a blackout?
Only if it is designed to. Backup circuits are a design decision, not an accessory, which is why an engineer chooses yours with you before anything is ordered.
